DIY Pom Pom Garland is such a fun and simple craft that looks fun and festive for any celebration! Add this DIY Pom Pom Garland to your tree for Christmas, use it to decorate for a birthday or add it in a nursery. No special equipment needed, you can create this handmade garland in no time at all!
A few years ago I wanted to make pom pom garland for our Christmas tree. I had seen some at a store and thought it looked so cute, but I did not want to pay the price that seemed way too high for a decoration that was essentially just yarn.
So I got myself to the craft store, bought some cream colored yarn to bring home, and got to work. The problem was, once I got the yarn home, I struggled to find a way to create the same look as the charming garland I had seen in the store!
My pom poms were too stringy and thin, I couldn’t figure out the best technique and was super frustrated. I finally decided wrapping it around a fork was the best way to get them to be somewhat uniform in size, but even still they were not quite what I had hoped for.
I was determined, though, so I made something that worked well enough. These pom pom garlands have been decking our halls for the past few years, but every year I put them up I wished it had turned out better than it did!
Fast forward to Christmas 2021. I am happy to say this was the year I FINALLY got back at it. I worked a little more to try to figure out how to make the perfect diy pom pom garland. And I am so happy with the result! This garland looks so cute on the tree the kids and I decorated with homemade Christmas Ornaments.
Tools and Materials you will need to make pom pom garland…
- Yarn – I used this one and there is a ton left for more projects. I love the soft off white color and the texture is perfect for these pom pom garlands
- Sharp Scissors – fabric scissors work the best with the yarn. Regular scissors for cutting the cardboard
- Cardboard
- Small can – for tracing, I used a tomato paste can
- Coin or smaller circular object – used to trace the inner part of your diy pom pom tool
DIY Pom Pom Tutorial –
- Begin by tracing two circles on your cardboard. The size can you choose will determine the size of your pom pom. I used a tomato paste can form medium sized pom poms.
- Use a coin or just freehand a circle in the center of the larger circle.
- Cut out the first cardboard pom pom form, leaving a space in the outer circle open. Trace this cut out form over the other circle and cut that out as well.
- Cut a piece of yarn that is about twice as long as the length of your pom pom form. Place it in between the two pieces of cardboard.
- Begin to wrap the yarn around the cardboard until it is layered and thick.
- Tie the long strings you placed in between the cardboard forms together.
- Cut the yarn in between the two pieces of cardboard with sharp fabric scissors. Tie one more knot with the longer pieces, and slip the cardboard forms out.
- Fluff and then Trim pom poms by using the cardboard as a shape guide.
- Repeat for however many pom poms you want.
Make the Chain Loop Stitch –
- Create a chain loop stitch the length of the garland you would like. Tie the pom poms on at equal distances.
- Trim the strings you tied the pom poms on to blend in with the rest of the pom pom.
Watch this video to see how to make the pom poms and the chain loop stitch by hand –
How far apart should I space my pom poms on the garland?
My pom poms are about 2 3/4″ wide and I chose to space them a foot apart. I am using my garland for this DIY Christmas Ornaments Tree I decorated with my kids. For my garland, I wanted the pom poms to be a little larger and spaced out. I am super happy with the size of the pom pom garland in proportion to the smaller tree we have for the kids.
As a rule of thumb, I think the larger the pom pom, the further apart they should be spaced, versus smaller pom poms needing to be spaced more closely together. You can play around with this by laying your chain loop stitched string on a table and placing the pom poms on it before tying them in place.
Do I have to do the chain loop stitch?
No, you definitely do not have to make a chain loop stitch for the pom pom garland. You can simply tie the pom poms onto a single piece of yarn. I did this years ago when I made my first set. However, I think it looks 100x better with the chain loop stitch garland! It might look intimidating but it is really not difficult.
Watch the video several times to see how you make it by hand and once you give it a few tries, it will just start to feel natural and you will get into a groove. I think mine took about 10 minutes to make and my garland is around 10 feet long!
You can also make this chain loop stitch using a crochet hook or thick knitting needles. But those tools are definitely not necessary to make the chain loop stitch.
